Anglia Fire Protection is looking at electrical fires and how to reduce the risk of them occurring in homes.

One of the most common causes of fire in the home is electrical goods. From white goods to faulty chargers, electrical items are the number 4 risk of fire in the home. Here are some top tips to help reduce that risk.

Anglia Fire Protection offers key pointers on how to avoid electrical fires at homes:

  • Residents should make sure that all electrical appliances have a British or European safety mark.
  • High powered electrical appliances, such as washing machines, should have a single plug to themselves.
  • Extension leads & adapters have a limit, as to how many amps they can take. Residents should make sure that they don’t overload them.
  • Monitor appliances for wear and tear. Look out for signs of loose wiring, scorch marks, damaged cables, etc.
  • Unplugging electrical appliances helps reduce the risk of fire.
  • Styling appliances, such as hair straighteners, curling tongs, etc. can heat up to extreme temperatures. Residents should make sure that they are placed on heatproof surfaces, both when being used and when cooling down. Unplug the appliances when not in use and allow them to cool down completely, before putting them away for safe storage.

Fire safety is the responsibility of everyone at home

Anglia Fire Protection stresses that fire safety is everyone’s responsibility within the home. It is important to make sure residents of all ages know what steps they can take, in order to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in the home.
