Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has safely contained the chemicals responsible for a reaction and minor elevated radiation levels outside the University of Sydney Sports Aquatic Centre in Darlington.
These contained chemicals are being handed back to the university for disposal as per its licensing agreement.
Baseline background levels
In conjunction with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), further testing has confirmed that radiation levels have returned to their baseline background levels.
In regard to radiation levels, a distinction is made between the dose already in a location, defined as 'background', and the dose due to a deliberately introduced and specified source. Radioactive material is found throughout nature, with detectable amounts occurring naturally in soil, rocks, water, air and vegetation.
FRNSW is in the process of a final clean-up of the incident. The site presents no further risk to the health and safety of the community.
