Fire penetrations are considered passive fire protection. They are openings in a wall or floor assembly required to have a fire-resistance rating; they may be fabricated by the use of a cast-in-place sleeve.

The purpose of these is to accommodate the passage of an electrical, mechanical, or structural penetrant. Penetrations may or may not have a firestop system.

Service contractors bore penetrations in walls, ceilings, floors, and other structural components of the building. These penetrations are usually made for communication cables, plumbing services, electrical wiring, etc.

Some of these contractors do not consider the appropriate fire-stopping procedures; using cement or plaster is no longer acceptable in stopping up the holes. This needs specialist contractors as per private certifiers and the council.

To ensure the fire safety of the building and its occupants, it is critical that the penetrations made by contractors are appropriately fire-stopped to protect the occupiers against smoke, flames, and gases.
