A serious incident occurred in Berkeley Vale, located on the Central Coast, where a man sustained severe injuries due to a gas barbecue accident.
The 58-year-old was preparing steak on the rear patio of his residence on Kingsford Smith Drive just before 7 p.m. last night when the accident took place. While increasing the gas flow on a 9kg LPG bottle, the hose detached, causing a leaking gas to ignite and leaving the man with significant burns to his face and upper body.

Responding swiftly to the incident, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) units from Berkeley Vale and Wyong Fire Stations, joined by the Rural Fire Service and NSW Police, arrived at the scene.

Subsequently, he was airlifted to a hospital by medical helicopter for advanced treatment. The emergency crews also ensured the safety of the area by cooling and securing the gas bottle.

It's crucial to regularly service and maintain barbecues to prevent similar mishaps. Keeping a garden hose or continuous water supply readily available is also advised. In case of a gas leak, shutting off the cylinder immediately and allowing the gas to dissipate can prevent accidents. Clearing combustible materials from the area before lighting a barbecue is another vital safety step.
