Templeton Fire Department welcomed its first Toyne Pumper to their fleet of apparatus – located in Baldwinville, Massachusetts. This is also the department’s first new apparatus in over a decade. Their customized Toyne will be replacing a truck that has been in service since 1987. The pumper will increase the firefighting strength and capabilities of the department.
Providing fire, rescue, and EMS services to the New England communities of Baldwinville and Templeton, the department serves over 7,000 people. With a total of 39 members, this combination fire department is comprised of both full-time and part-time personnel.
Fire suppression capabilities
Managing two stations, the firefighters respond to more than 1,000 calls per year. Many operational needs of the area went into the final design considerations for their Toyne tailored apparatus. The pumper is mounted on a Spartan Metro Star MFD chassis with a 10-inch raised roof cab. Capable of producing 380 horsepower, the apparatus is powered by a Cummins ISL9 engine and Allison 3000 EVS transmission. The body is built with bolted-painted stainless steel, designed with longevity in mind.
Fitted with a Hale Qmax pump, water can be pumped out at 1,500 gallons per minute. A Fire Research Pump Boss pressure governor regulates the flow of water. Toyne equipped the apparatus with a 1,000-gallon UPF tank with an ICI SL Plus tank gauge. Further fire suppression capabilities were made with the addition of an Elkhart Kit 2 foam system.

“The truck is absolutely beautiful,” said Fire Chief Dave Dickie. “It is everything that the company told us it would come out to be. All of the compartment space is going to be way more than we need. It’s a great looking truck.”

The flexibility of being able to customize things the way you want has been a great help. This whole process is new for us, to be involved in speccing out a truck. The process was very pleasing. It went really well and we are happy with the product. We would definitely recommend it.”
