Cummins Inc. announced that, effective November 2, Steve Pinkston is being named the Rocky Mount Engine Plant (RMEP) Plant Manager. Pinkston will replace John Judd, who, also effective November 2, is being named the North America Operations Leader for Cummins-Meritor.

Pinkston will be the 13th plant manager since the plant opened in Whitakers, North Carolina in 1981. The midrange diesel and natural gas engine plant has manufactured nearly 5 million engines and produces engines for more than 500 customers and employs approximately 1,800 people.

I’m extremely excited to have someone of Steve’s caliber to take the reins at RMEP,” said Ed Andros, Executive Director, Manufacturing Custodial Plants, Cummins. “Steve is a pressure tested and courageous leader who can plan strategically and execute tactically at the same time. Rocky Mount Engine Plant is well positioned with Steve at the helm for the next phase of our journey.”

11-year run

Most recently, Pinkston has acted as the North American Director of Supply Continuity since 2020. Throughout his 11-year run with Cummins, he began his career working as a Supplier Development Engineer focused within stampings and fabrication.

Since then, he has advanced to managerial roles within the sourcing and supplier risk divisions and served as the Cummins Emissions Systems (CES) Purchasing Director for three years. Pinkston has a strong understanding of the Cummins supply base and continues to lead significant operational improvements throughout the RMEP supply chain.

Pinkston’s education

Pinkston holds a Bachelor of Science in Operations and Supply Chain Management

Pinkston holds a Bachelor of Science in Operations and Supply Chain Management from Iowa State University and a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University.

During his career, he has demonstrated the ability to lead large teams and drive sustainable processes and results within supply chain. He enjoys outdoor activities in his free time and resides with his wife and three sons.

The next phase

In the next phase of his journey, Judd will serve as the North America Operations Leader for Cummins-Meritor. Having completed the acquisition of Meritor, Inc., in August 2022, Judd will help with the integration of Meritor’s products and capabilities.

His new role will be an important step in achieving net-zero emissions as Cummins positions itself as a leading provider of integrated powertrain solutions across internal combustion and electric power applications.

Working with Judd

Pinkston began his career on the RMEP shop floor as an engine assembly technician

Beginning his career on the RMEP shop floor as an engine assembly technician, Judd has been with Cummins for more than 34 years and has held numerous roles. Since 2016, Judd has served as the RMEP Plant Manager and led the charge in modernizing facilities, creating more efficient plant practices, and continuing to drive innovation for sustainable and profitable growth.

Judd has been a pillar in the local community serving as an executive board member of the local chamber of commerce and as the board chair of the Strategic Twin Counties Education Partnership (STEP). He has continually served for the people of RMEP and for the local community. Pinkston plans to continue the strong community engagement of previous leaders, including Judd.

An amazing career

John had an amazing career at RMEP, building and developing strong teams, delivering outstanding results, and building high-quality engines for our customers,” said Andros.

He led the plant through arguably the most challenging time in our industry’s history and his work ethic, commitment, tenacity, and winning attitude have been inspiring.”

I am filled with pride and admiration for what John has done for the people of RMEP. He is truly a caring leader who will be missed in this capacity.”
