Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has commissioned a versatile new fire engine to protect communities in Sydney’s west.

The Scania P320 Class 3 pumper is valued at $885,000 and has been deployed to FRNSW’s St Marys Fire Station. It features a Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS), which allows a mixture of foam and water to extinguish flames more efficiently.

FRNSW Acting Area Commander, Acting Chief Superintendent Andrew Shurety, said while all fire trucks are versatile, this appliance is specifically designed to deal with hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents such as chemical spills or fuel leaks.

Range of different equipment

"The truck carries a range of different equipment to detect and deal with HAZMAT emergencies in the city’s west," said Acting Chief Supt Shurety, adding "That means it can respond to a range of different emergencies across the western suburbs. It’s prepared for anything."

Another layer of protection

Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib, said the versatile truck represented another layer of protection for the people of Western Sydney.

Jihad Dib adds, "Whether it’s a fuel spill, a residential blaze or an industrial fire, this truck will be on the front line of our emergency response."

Latest in firefighting equipment

Minister for Western Sydney and local Member for Londonderry, Prue Car, said she was pleased to see the local firefighters could make use of this new fire truck.

Prue Car stated, "It is wonderful to see our team at St Marys Fire Station equipped with the latest in firefighting equipment, particularly as we head towards another Western Sydney summer season."
