There was a round of 'a-paws' for Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews on the Central Coast yesterday when they rescued a pet dog and bird from a house fire.
Seven fire appliances, including an aerial platform, rushed to the two-storey home in Rumbalara Place in Springfield, around 2 pm.
Food scraps in the kitchen

As they moved to extinguish food scraps in the kitchen, firefighters were alerted by the homeowner that his family's pet dog, 'Chrissy,' was still inside the house, trapped on the second floor.
A fire crew was dispatched and found the frightened eight-year-old Poodle, hiding behind a speaker, and a Cockatiel, named 'E-bonn,' in its cage.
Bit of smoke inhalation
The light brown-coloured dog was blackened by soot. The fire was quickly doused and the pets reunited with their relieved owner, Jerry Van der Slot. Mr. Van der Slot has praised the fire crews for saving the lives of the family pets and the home.
"We're off to the vets today to check up on 'Chrissy,' who's got a bit of smoke inhalation but is otherwise okay," said Mr. Van der Slot.
He believes a faulty stove may have started the blaze. The Central Coast fire crews 'paw-sitively' chuffed they could save the day for 'Chrissy' and her 'feathered friend.'
