Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) has successfully contained a significant blaze that ravaged two multi-storey structures in Surry Hills, Sydney. The fire, which ignited on Randle Street shortly after 4 pm, was escalated to a '10th alarm', indicating its severity.
Despite the scale of the incident, FRNSW's Incident Controller confirmed control over the situation, marking a critical turning point in the firefighting efforts.
Efforts in Containment
Over 100 firefighters from various Sydney stations responded to the emergency, combating flames from a safe distance. Utilizing specialized equipment such as ladder trucks and remotely piloted aerial systems (drones), they managed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, including residential complexes.
FRNSW's Incident Controller stated that the fire is now contained, underscoring the effective strategy and coordination of the crew.
Ongoing Firefighting Operations
The operations are expected to extend throughout the night, with firefighting teams rotating shifts to maintain health and safety standards. Authorities have enforced an exclusion zone around the area, advising the public to remain clear.
Residents near the scene are urged to shut their windows and doors to mitigate smoke exposure. Once the fire is completely extinguished, the Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU) of FRNSW will collaborate with NSW Police to determine the fire's cause.
