Fire At Mason City Recycling Center Challenges Crews

A large building at Mason City Recycling Center was heavily damaged in a fire Friday night. No one was present at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported, according to a press release from the Mason City Fire Department.

However, the absence of nearby fire hydrants presented a significant challenge for firefighting efforts, requiring water to be shuttled to the scene. In addition, cold temperatures and strong winds causing the flames to spread to outdoor equipment and surrounding grass areas, the fire department reported.

A passerby reported the fire shortly after 8 p.m. at the building, located at 16615 245th St. Numerous local agencies assisted in battling the blaze, including the Rockwell, Nora Springs, Clear Lake, and Ventura fire departments. 

The Mason City Police Department, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management, Iowa State Patrol, and Alliant Energy were also involved in the response. Helena Agri-Enterprises LLC hauled water to the site with a semi-tanker.

Crews remained on-site until about 1:30 a.m., containing the fire and preventing its spread to nearby buildings, according to the Mason City Fire Department. Local businesses, including Hy-Vee Food Store, Domino’s Pizza, and Kwik Star, provided food and water to first responders.

Prevent further fire spread

Firefighters continued to monitor the building as some material inside remained burning. The structure itself has been deemed unsafe for entry due to significant damage. Strong winds are expected to persist throughout the weekend, and crews will remain vigilant to prevent further fire spread.
