More than 50 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have battled a ferocious fire in a derelict building at Granville, in Sydney's west overnight. The blaze broke out in the two-level property in Good Street, around a quarter to four in the morning.

At least 23 fire appliances, including aerial platforms and rescue units, rushed to the scene and found the building engulfed in fire.

Building prevented firefighters

Signs of structural collapse on at least 2 sides of the building prevented firefighters from entering the premises

Fire crews prevented flames as high as 10-meters from spreading to vacant shops next door. Signs of structural collapse on at least two sides of the building prevented firefighters from entering the premises.

Instead, they used aerial platforms to reach over the roof to pour water on the seat of the fire and regularly assessed the threat using Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), or drones. It took an hour to gain control of the blaze.

NSW Police and Fire Investigators

Crews are continuing to monitor the site's instability and potential hotspots. NSW Police and Fire Investigators will work together to determine the cause of the fire.

Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area this morning.
