Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) successfully extinguished a fire that posed a severe threat to a chemical recycling plant located in Sydney's western suburbs overnight. The incident, which erupted on Christie Street in St Marys shortly before 9 PM, called for a robust response involving over 50 firefighters and 12 emergency vehicles.
Intense Firefighting Efforts
The blaze initially engulfed a 30 cubic meter hook bin and numerous bulk containers filled with chemical waste. As flames began to encroach upon the storage warehouse, there was an imminent danger posed by six LPG-powered forklifts parked just beyond the wall adjoining the blaze.
Collaborative Response
FRNSW crews labored for more than an hour to subdue the fire, successfully averting a disaster by preventing it from reaching the warehouse and the dangerous chemicals it contained. The response was notably enhanced by the facility operators, who were present to offer crucial technical details about the premises and materials involved.
Ongoing Investigation
Though the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, authorities have indicated that it is not being treated as suspicious. The cooperation and preparedness of both the emergency services and the facility operators contributed significantly to averting a potentially large-scale chemical emergency.
