The driver of an overturned car carrier has escaped without injury at Kembla Grange, in the state’s Illawarra.

Fire crews responded to the crash just before 1 a.m., finding the semi-trailer, with seven new cars on board, had toppled over.

Six FRNSW trucks

Six FRNSW trucks from Shellharbour, Dapto, Wollongong and Unanderra, managed the emergency incident overnight.

Surrounding power lines had fallen during the crash, causing recovery effort delays and causing a small grassfire nearby.

Truck’s diesel tanks

Two of the truck’s diesel tanks had ruptured, causing a spill on the road, requiring FRNSW’s specialist

Two of the truck’s diesel tanks had ruptured, causing a spill on the road, requiring FRNSW’s specialist ‘Hazmat’ response crews to clean up and render the area safe.

FRNSW Duty Commander, Chad Wallace, described it as a challenging operation with many moving parts. “This incident has been quite protracted due to its complexity,” said Inspector Wallace said.

Fallen power lines

Chad Wallace added: “The fallen power lines, hazardous spill, and grassfire made this incident quite tricky to combat. Our priority was to ensure that the fallen power lines were isolated so the area was safe, a process that took approximately two hours.”

The clean-up of the scene continues; however, no road closures are in place. The cause of the crash is being investigated by NSW Police.
