Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews have been kept busy, dealing with three separate car fires in just four hours overnight across Sydney’s west.

The most challenging incident involved a hybrid vehicle on fire in Chiswick Road, Greenacre, around 11.30 pm. When crews arrived, they noticed the car's fuel tank had ruptured.

Safer location for further investigation

Firefighters successfully contained the burning fuel and prevented the fire's spread

Firefighters successfully contained the burning fuel and prevented the fire's spread. Exposed to the extreme heat, the vehicle's battery was at risk of entering 'thermal runaway,' a process in which an overheated cell can issue explosive, toxic gas before bursting into intense flames.

Firefighters carefully monitored the battery for over an hour, ensuring it had cooled and stabilised. FRNSW worked with NSW Police to relocate the vehicle to a safer location for further investigation.

Vehicle fire incidents

Another car fire occurred just after 2.30 am in the front yard of a home in Ibsen Place at Wetherill Park, in Sydney's south-west, while firefighters doused a third burning vehicle in Reading Avenue at Kings Langley. That blaze was reported to FRNSW around 3 am.

The Rural Fire Service attended a fourth vehicle fire in Grantham Way at Blacktown, just after 12.30 am.
