Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) effectively tackled a substantial fire incident in Darlinghurst, Sydney, deploying over 40 firefighters. The blaze erupted on the 15th floor of an apartment building on Oxford Street shortly after 5 pm.
Firefighters from various city stations responded promptly to an automated alarm and multiple emergency calls from eyewitnesses.
Efficient Rescue Operations
The fire crews swiftly entered the affected unit and managed to keep the blaze from spreading. A firefighter remained with two elderly residents in a nearby apartment and escorted them safely out once conditions allowed.
After being assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics, the residents were found to be unharmed. The firefighter who assisted them is currently undergoing further medical evaluation at a hospital.
Smoke Mitigation and Investigation
Due to significant smoke infiltration in the building's communal areas, residents on other floors were advised to stay inside their apartments to reduce the risk of smoke inhalation.
Firefighters are actively working to ventilate the building. The exact cause of the fire is yet unknown and is under investigation.
More than 40 Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have extinguished a major blaze in a unit block at Darlinghurst, in Sydney's inner city. The fire broke out inside an apartment on the 15th floor of the Oxford Street complex, just after 5 pm.
FRNSW crews, from multiple stations across the city, were initially alerted by an automated fire alarm before multiple witnesses called Triple Zero (000) to report the fire.
Rescue effort
Firefighters quickly gained access to the burning unit and contained the fire. One firefighter remained with two elderly occupants inside a neighboring unit and, when it was safe to do so, assisted them out of the building.
Those residents have since been assessed and cleared by NSW Ambulance paramedics, while the firefighter who helped them is being taken to the hospital for further observation.
Due to the extensive spread of smoke throughout the building's common areas, residents on other floors were instructed to remain inside their units to protect them against potential smoke inhalation. Fire crews are continuing to ventilate the building. At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated.
