Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) specialists in structural collapse have deployed laser monitoring tools to evaluate the risk of a potentially unstable building wall in Tighes Hill, Newcastle. The operation was initiated following reports of a possible building collapse just after 8:30 am this morning on Elizabeth Street.
Initial Response to Structural Concerns
The property, which was undergoing renovation at the time, exhibited significant cracks on its front wall, raising concerns about its stability. In response, firefighters promptly disconnected gas and electricity supplies to the building and safely evacuated all occupants. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. An exclusion zone was established to ensure public safety, effectively closing Elizabeth Street between Maitland Road and Union Street.
Coordinated Efforts and Ongoing Monitoring
FRNSW established a multi-agency command center to coordinate the evaluation process and ensure thorough monitoring of the wall's condition. The timeline for when the evacuated residents can return remains undetermined as authorities continue their assessment.
