The Ankeny Fire Department added the power of two Iowa-built fire trucks from Toyne Fire Apparatus to its fleet. Toyne delivered the identical pumpers to Ankeny, Iowa’s department in late May, bolstering its response time and firefighting capabilities.

Pumper Features

Toyne designed Ankeny’s pumpers for strength and reliability, building both bolted stainless steel bodies on the sturdy frame of a Spartan Metro Star LFD chassis with a 10-inch raised roof. The apparatus is driven by Allison 3000 EVS transmissions and powered by the force of Cummins ISL9 450 horsepower engines.

Equipped to handle the toughest of fires, these Toyne Pumpers also boast Hale Qmax 1,500 gallon-per-minute pumps supplied by UPF 500-gallon tanks. Ankeny’s new apparatus each includes an Akron Apollo Hi-Riser monitor and Whelen telescoping lights.

Provides Public Safety

The department, located in the rapidly growing Des Moines suburb Ankeny, serves a community of over 60,000 people in central Iowa. It is a combination of career and volunteer firefighters, and places a strong emphasis on its public safety education, educating hundreds of children and adults every year. Ankeny was named the fourth-fastest-growing city in the country by the U.S. Census Bureau this year, and its fire department, which was established in 1910, is set to open a third station in the fall of 2018.

As a proud Iowa-based company, we were honored to build apparatus for this expanding city and fire department,” said Michael Schwabe, president and CEO of Toyne, Inc. “These pumpers will add more firefighting strength to Ankeny, giving their brave firefighters important resources and tools.”

The new apparatus will be used to equip the city’s new fire station, which is planned to open in north Ankeny in September.
