In a significant boost to fire protection in Sydney's south-west, the Fire and Rescue NSW has added a new fire truck to its fleet. The Scania P320 Class 3 Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) Pumper, valued at $950,000, now serves as the primary response vehicle at the Smithfield Fire Station.
This advanced pumper accommodates up to five firefighters and is tailored for both urban and regional operations. With in-cabin Breathing Apparatus-equipped seating and an automatic transmission, it is designed to adapt to the diverse demands of firefighting in both settings.

The truck's CAFS technology plays a crucial role in enhancing firefighting efficiency by significantly reducing water usage, while providing effective foam and water dispersal. This not only aids in rapid fire suppression but also minimizes the environmental impact by reducing runoff.
The P320 model also offers options like a joint Pumper/Hazmat or Primary Rescue vehicle, but its deployment as a pumper aligns perfectly with the needs of the Smithfield area.
FRNSW Zone Commander, Andrew Shurety, emphasized the suitability of this fire truck for the region, stating, “The Smithfield area contains a lot of industrial businesses that require a rapid-fire response.”
Enhanced Pumping Capacity
Superintendent Shurety praised the truck's capabilities, noting, “The pumping capacity on this truck means it’s ready to deal with any fire emergency that occurs in Sydney’s west, and I know the Smithfield firefighters are very happy with the new addition that will make their jobs easier.”
Emergency Services Minister, Jihad Dib, also expressed his approval of the new pumper, which is now operational in Sydney’s industrial hub.
“This new pumper is now on watch in Sydney’s industrial heartland, ready to protect life and property in the city’s west,” said Minister Dib, adding “The truck’s CAFS capabilities mean we can put fires out faster, with additional benefits to the environment.”

State Member for Prospect, Hugh McDermott, highlighted the importance of equipping local heroes with advanced tools.
“Our Fire and Rescue crews in Smithfield go above and beyond to keep our community safe,” stated Hugh McDermott, adding “This cutting-edge technology will equip our dedicated local firefighters with the tools they need to continue providing rapid responses to protect Sydney’s industrial capital, here in the electorate of Prospect.”
