Whether repairing, rebuilding, building for the first time, or making home improvements, this is an ideal time to incorporate disaster-resistant measures.
Over the next three weeks, teams of hazard mitigation specialists with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be available at six home improvement stores in Connecticut to provide information and answer residents' questions about protecting their homes from future disaster damage.
Connecticut residents who are repairing or rebuilding after this spring's storms and flooding face many choices – and opportunities – about how they put the pieces of their homes and lives back together. Whether repairing, rebuilding, building for the first time, or making home improvements, this is an ideal time to incorporate disaster-resistant measures. Many are inexpensive steps that have proven effective throughout the nation in minimizing storm and flood damage.
Officials agree that the best way to minimize damage from storms and flooding and break the costly cycle of damage-repair-damage is to use techniques that resist both flood and wind damage.

The FEMA teams will explain construction techniques and offer advice on topics such as home elevation, wind straps, flood insurance, and other steps to make homes stronger and safer. Publications on these topics will also be available.
