Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is spearheading the coordination of additional flood response teams, including international experts in water rescues, as parts of Central West New South Wales grapple with unprecedented river flooding.
A team of 18 water rescue professionals from Singapore has arrived at Sydney Airport, where they were welcomed by FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter, among others leading the flood response efforts.
Deployment of FRNSW and Singaporean Teams
The newly arrived crews will undergo a practical induction before their deployment to Parkes and Wagga Wagga in the following days.
Additionally, a FRNSW strike team, composed of a team leader and four specialized firefighters, has departed Sydney, bound for Parkes to assist in flood rescues, evacuations, and other related tasks.
Collaboration with NSW SES
The Singaporean in-water rescue specialists will be integrated with existing FRNSW resources stationed throughout the Central West. Their collaboration supports the operations led by the New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES). The region is experiencing a prolonged flood event, ongoing for 65 consecutive days.
Emergency services are currently concentrating efforts on Condobolin and Forbes, with the Lachlan River expected to reach a peak of 10.8 meters, a level not witnessed in seventy years.
Ongoing Challenges and Safety Precautions
While the affected regions are forecasted to experience dry conditions until Saturday, a new wave of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds is anticipated. Further communities are likely to face impacts from this impending weather system.
FRNSW strongly advises against driving, walking, riding, playing, or swimming in floodwaters, emphasizing the inherent dangers and toxicity of these waters. Their message to the public is clear: "If it's flooded, forget it."
