  • FRNSW firefighter Gavin Clifton tackles 18-hour climb for Motor Neurone Disease research.
  • Participants climb 55km and 10,000 steps in Blue Mountains' challenging Furber Steps.
  • Join Gavin's climb at Scenic World; proceeds aid 'Firies Climb for MND' program.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighter, Gavin Clifton, is just days away from his latest fund-raising venture for charity, climbing 18 hours non-stop up and down the Furber Steps at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains.

Gavin, an On-call (Retained) firefighter based at Wentworth Falls Fire Station, is aiming to raise $50,000 to aid research into Motor Neurone Disease, as part of the annual ‘Firies Climb for MND’ program.

Originating from his initial Sydney Tower climb, Gavin is “upping the ante” on his fourth assault on the Furber Steps and will push his body to the limit between 10 pm on Friday, 15 September, to 4 pm on Saturday, 16 September.

Scenic World

The climb will see Gavin and his fellow runners exceed 55km and 10,000 steps

Starting and finishing at Scenic World, this year’s challenge will see Gavin joined by fellow firefighters, paramedics, police, trail runners, and members of the general public, as they look to tackle one of the most difficult sets of stairs in the whole mountain range.

The climb will see Gavin and his fellow runners exceed 55km and 10,000 steps, equivalent to climbing up and down Sydney Tower 65 times.

MND is a terrible disease, but I’m hoping that this year is going to be the biggest and best run ever,” Gavin said. “Anyone is welcome to come and join me as an individual or as part of a team. You can run with me for the full 18 hours or just do what you can manage. Whatever it is, it will make a huge difference to our overall fundraising.”

You can still help out if you can’t run by coming down to Scenic World to support us and celebrate afterwards.
