Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters have battled for more than two hours to extinguish a fierce blaze which has destroyed an automotive workshop and several vehicles in Sydney's south-west.

More than 30 FRNSW firefighters tackled the blaze, which had taken hold in the building on Carlingford Street, Sefton, just before 3 am.

Firefighters were successful in stopping the flames from spreading to an adjoining property

Firefighters were successful in stopping the flames from spreading to an adjoining property, using ladder trucks to get above the fire, which had intensified due to several vehicles catching fire within the workshop.

They were also able to access the rear of the fire using specialist cutting equipment.

FRNSW expert fire investigators

In order to further contain the after-effects of the fire, absorbent booms were brought in and placed over all drains at the workshop to prevent excess runoff.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, with FRNSW expert fire investigators working with NSW Police to determine the origin of the blaze.
