The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) today announced the appointment of Scott Sutherland as executive editor of the NFPA Journal. He has over 20 years of journalism experience, including staff writing, and editing and management positions and freelance contributions to print and online publications. Sutherland will oversee all editorial activities for NFPA's official magazine.

In addition to extensive freelance work, Sutherland's most recent positions include director of the writing program at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine; serving as a features editor for The Boston Globe; and editor-in-chief of Mainebiz, a publication that won 13 national editorial and design awards in four years from the Association of Area Business Publications during his tenure. Through the years, his contributions have been included in a wide-ranging list of publications, including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Metropolis, Runners World, SKI, The New Yorker, Salon, Outside and The Boston Globe Magazine.

"Scott brings a fantastic mix of journalism experience that will benefit our magazine," said Lorraine Carli, NFPA's vice president of communications. "His leadership will be central to our efforts as we continue to engage readers by offering topical content related to fire and life safety in our print and online editions of NFPA Journal."

Sutherland holds a master's degree in teaching from Brown University of Rhode Island and a bachelor's degree in English and American Studies from Grinnell College of Grinnell, Iowa.
